How to eat healthy on a budget

As much as we all want to be those girls on TikTok whose ‘What I Eat in a Day’ in composed of gorgeous acai bowls, oat lattes, and ‘green goddess’ salads, the unfortunate reality is that our budget seems to love some good beans on toast or pesto pasta. However, being healthy is not as expensive as it looks. Here are a few ways we can all channel our inner clean girl, on a uni budget.

Buy frozen fruit and veggies

This is especially good for smoothies, for which you can blend frozen fruit with milk or a milk substitute. Buying frozen saves you from buying fresh produce all the time, and doesn’t actually change much in your recipe.

Buy in bulk

Whole grain pasta, for example, is better for you than the standard type and is super affordable in bulk. As mentioned previously, frozen fruit and veg can also be bulk bought.

Meal prep

Personally, nothing makes me feel like I’ve got my life together more than a fridge with five tupperware meals that I just batch cooked for the week. It’s a cheaper way to do it and saves you so much time, which is essential in uni when you have 10000 other things going on. It also forces you to eat the homemade, healthy meal that you prepared for lunch, instead of forcing you to go buy your third meal deal of the week when on campus.

Make your own snacks

There are so many online recipes for healthy snacks online, and this ensures you’re not munching on constant crisps and chocolate bars at the library. We all crave a sweet treat, and things like DIY snickers bars made with dates, or those raspberry chocolate bars are perfect.
