Nottingham City Guide
Nottingham, located in the East Midlands, is a vibrant and dynamic city and home to two major universities, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University. This means there is a thriving student community and amazing opportunities from sports to textiles.
Universities
As mentioned, there are two universities in Nottingham, with a light-hearted feud between them, which is heightened during the ice hockey varsity. The oldest university, University of Nottingham is known for being a Russell Group university and top university targeted by employers UK. It offers a wide variety of study options including foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate study. Its sister university Nottingham Trent, is known for its range of courses from academic to creative and has won multiple awards from 1st in the UK for employability and course quality.
Student Accommodation
Both universities have multiple campuses, so students live in multiple areas like Nottingham City, Clifton or Beeston. As a result, there are lots of accommodation options to choose from like private halls or shared houses! Whilst the city centre is close to shops and nightlife, the Clifton area is much quieter.
Getting Around
Regardless of where you choose to live in Nottingham, you’ll have easy access to everything because of the great transportation links like the tram, bus or train.
Food and Drink
Firstly, DoughNotts just off Old Market Square. They offer student discounts, vegan options and doughnuts loaded with biscuits and sweet icing. Another spot is 200° Coffee, their flagship store a short walk from Nottingham train station offers a range of drinks from a Spanish latte to matcha. They have loads of light snacks like cake and soups.
Nightlife
Rock city is one of the most legendary clubs in Nottingham with over 2000 students packing out Rock City every single week. Known for hosting some of the biggest names in music, as well as emerging talent and local acts. But, Nottingham’s only 100% student nightclub Ocean is by far the best! A place where fancy dress is always encouraged, Ocean Wednesday for the Trent Army allows NTSU's official sports and societies to get together in themed outfits like cops and robbers, pyjamas or wild west.
Study Spots
Both universities have a variety of libraries across their campuses. 200 degrees coffee is also a great choice for students who want a relaxed environment.
Local Amenities
Across the city there are numerous branches of Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s local which are great for convenience. If you need to do a bigger food shop though, Aldi and Lidl are just a short bus ride or walk from campus, with Morrisons and Asda being further afield. For shopping, students often hit the Victoria Centre which is home to a range of shops, restaurants and a market.
Both universities have their own sports facilities including a gym, swimming pool and courts. If you prefer somewhere else, there are commercial gyms and sports centres in the city. They also both have their own dedicated health centres for students, with the University of Nottingham also having a dental clinic.
