Student ideas for celebrating Halloween

Halloween is one of my favourite holidays of the year. It’s the perfect excuse for a party, fancy dress, and it marks the cozy transition from summer into autumn. It’s the season for muddy pumpkin picking, scary movies, and indulging in all things spooky. If you’re a student and stuck for ideas on how to celebrate this Halloween season, read on!

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

A must-do in October is visiting a pumpkin patch with your friends. Look up the nearest patch, take a walk through the muddy fields, and pick out your favorite pumpkins—but don’t forget your wellies like I did! Afterward, warm up at a café with a hot chocolate.

Not only is this a fun day out, but you can continue the Halloween festivities back home by carving your pumpkins together. If there’s no local pumpkin patch, don’t worry—grab a pumpkin from any supermarket and get creative! Make it competitive by hosting a carving contest. Let your flatmates vote for the best design, and award the winner a prize.

If you’re not a fan of the mess that comes with carving, try painting pumpkins instead! You can use acrylic paints or pick up artificial pumpkins with painting kits, which are becoming widely available in stores. Either way, this is a crafty, festive activity perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit.

Watch Scary Movies

It wouldn’t be Halloween without at least one scary movie. You can play a film in the background while carving pumpkins or host a full-on movie night! Stock up on snacks, set up a cozy space, and watch some horror classics with your friends.

If jump scares aren’t your thing, opt for Halloween-themed favorites like Hocus Pocus, Coraline, or Corpse Bride. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the local cinema to see if there’s a new horror release showing—it’s always fun to experience the scares on the big screen.

Throw a Halloween Party

As a student, a Halloween party is a great way to celebrate!

  • Dress up: Plan group or themed costumes with your flatmates and friends to make it even more fun.
  • Snacks and drinks: Get creative with spooky cocktails and Halloween-themed snacks. Have everyone bring their contribution to the party!
  • Games: Incorporate scary movies into a drinking game—like taking a shot for every jump scare.

Decorating your house doesn’t have to be expensive. Affordable Halloween decorations can be found at stores like Poundland or Tiger—think cobwebs, fake spiders, and skeletons to set the spooky mood.

If no one wants to host, don’t worry—most towns and cities have Halloween-themed club events. Look up what’s happening locally, and buy tickets in advance since Halloween nights tend to sell out quickly.

Take It Up a Notch with a Halloween Trip

If you’re looking to go all out this year, book a trip to Thorpe Park Fright Night or Tulleys Farm for a truly immersive Halloween experience. With horror mazes, live actors, and thrilling rides at night, these events promise scares and unforgettable memories.

Whatever way you choose to celebrate, Halloween is the perfect excuse to have fun, get creative, and enjoy the season with your friends. Happy Halloween!
