What do I do with items I don’t need when I move out?
Moving out can be so overwhelming, and having loads of things to move around can be daunting. However, it is likely you will find yourself surrounded by items you no longer want or need. This would be the perfect time to sort through and get rid of things before you move - it will be one less thing to lug about! There are many different ways of getting rid of your old stuff, and below we will cover a few of the best ways to get rid of things from your university accommodation you don’t need anymore:

Sort Everything Out

The first step is to take a good look at your belongings and figure out what you do and don’t want. You can sort your stuff into different piles: keep, sell, donate, recycle, and, unfortunately, throw away. It might seem overwhelming to look at all your stuff at first, but it can help to look in sections. Start with your clothes, then look at your books and then bathroom things and so on. This is a really important step so you don’t end up getting rid of too much or too little and trust me, it's therapeutic. Plus, it gives you a fresh start! Here’s a reminder of what you actually need at university

Selling Your Stuff

The first method is selling your things! Got items in good condition that you don’t need anymore? Why not turn them into some extra money for summer! There are so many online marketplaces that are perfect for this depending on the item type. If it is clothing, Vinted and Depop are good platforms, but if it is furniture for example, you will be better at looking into Facebook Marketplace and eBay.  Whilst getting a bit of money for your items is always a bonus, remember this method can be time consuming and could even be costly, with packaging and postage. If that seems a bit too much hassle, let's look at some other options…

Donating to a Good Cause

If selling isn’t your thing, or you just want to do something nice, donating is the way to go. There are lots of ways this can be done, but popping down to your local charity shops is the easiest. Various gently used items are accepted, but it is a good idea to check what your charity shop accepts or doesn’t at the time.  Just because you don’t want it, doesn’t mean someone else won’t, and it is always a good idea to help out charities!

Recycling Responsibly

The expression ‘One man’s trash, is another man’s treasure’ doesn’t apply quite so literally here. For those things that are beyond donation, recycling is your best friend.  An easy first step is to use designated recycling bins for paper, plastic, glass, and metals. Another thing to consider is if you have any old electronics. These are recycled separately, and  some stores offer e-waste recycling programs. A quick search in your area can tell you where. Whilst clearing things out can be overwhelming, and you might just want it done as soon as possible, it is important that you carry out proper rubbish disposal. Check if it can be recycled, and if it can’t, then dispose of it correctly. Use the correct bins, check local regulations and research regarding bulk waste if you have lots of stuff.

Look Out For Events

Some universities know that moving out is a yearly struggle for students, and often organise student events for donating and swapping items. This can be great way to get rid of things, and help a fellow student out at the same time! Keep an eye out for announcements from your University or ask someone if there is a similar scheme in place at your school.  Whilst clearing your things out can be overwhelming, so can moving 3000 bags around when you move out! A necessary evil, and you will feel so much better after. Try some of our methods to get rid of your unwanted items and enjoy a stress-free and de-cluttered move!
