What do I need to bring with me?

As a first year student, there are several things you'll need to bring with you to university. Here are some of the essential items you should consider bringing:
- Identification documents: This includes your passport, driving licence or student visa. You may need these if you wish to go out to bars and clubs, or if you secure a job. If you are an international student, check online what ID is accepted in the UK.
- Academic materials: This includes your textbooks, notepads, pens, highlighters, and any other stationery items you may need for your courses. Check before you go if you need to buy any books or if you can access these online.
- Laptop or computer: Most universities require students to have access to a computer, and many courses may require you to submit assignments online. Make sure you have a reliable laptop or computer with internet access. Some universities, such as the University of Bristol, offer a digital hardship fund which can assist with purchasing a reliable laptop.
- Bedding and towels: Most university accommodations do not provide bedding or towels, so be sure to bring your own. You may want to consider purchasing a mattress topper or pillow as well for added comfort. Ensure you also have a mattress protector.
- Clothing: Pack clothing appropriate for the weather and for various occasions. You don't need to bring all your clothes. For instance, you may want to move in with winter clothes and then when you visit home closer to summer, you can swap these out.
- Kitchen supplies: If you plan to cook your own meals, you'll need to bring some basic kitchen supplies such as plates, bowls, utensils, and pots and pans. Check with your flatmates what they are bringing so you don’t all bring washing up liquid! To find out who you will live with, click here.
- Toiletries: This includes items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. If you are in a shared bathroom, you may want to get something to store these in that you can easily transport between your room and bathroom.
- Medications: If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring enough for the duration of your stay. Think about registering with a local doctor too.
- Personal items: Bring items that will make your living space feel like home, such as photos, posters, or decorations. To find out whether you can decorate your room, click here.
It's important to remember that you may not need to bring everything on this list, and you should check with your university for specific guidelines on what is and is not allowed in student accommodations. With proper planning and preparation, you can ensure that you have everything you need to start your university journey on the right foot.
