What is the best way to find accommodation?
Finding accommodation may seem daunting but it can be really simple. Here are some useful tips to make the process easier:
Start early
It's important to start your search for accommodation as early as possible. Many universities have accommodation offices that can provide information on available options, so be sure to contact them early to find out what is available. Keep checking your emails too for any updates. For more information on accommodation guarantees, read this blog.
Consider your options
The type of accommodation you choose will depend on your preferences and budget. You can choose from university-owned halls of residence, private rented accommodation, or shared housing. Take time to research each option to determine which is best for you.
Research online
Accommodation for Students can help you find available accommodation in your university's area. These websites allow you to filter your search based on location, budget, and other preferences. You can see what is available here.
Attend university accommodation webinars
Universities often hold accommodation fairs that give you the opportunity to meet with landlords and property managers in person. We hosted one ourselves in August 2022, called AFS Live which featured a range of accommodation providers offering first-year accommodation. We were also available to answer your questions.
Ask for recommendations
Reach out to other students who have already found accommodation to see if they have any recommendations. Online platforms such as the Student Room will also have reviews on individual halls.
Check for safety and security
When viewing accommodation options, check to ensure that they meet safety and security standards. Look for safety features such as smoke detectors and secure locks on windows and doors.
Read your tenancy agreement
Before signing, read all the information, especially about where your deposit will be held, and what charges may occur for damages. This will also include your start and end dates.
By following these tips, you can find suitable university accommodation that meets your needs and budget. Remember to start your search early, research your options, and prioritise safety and security when viewing potential properties.
