Perhaps better known for the famous Cheltenham races, this large spa town hosts the University of Gloucestershire with its 9,000 students. Its proximity to the Cotswolds, together with its literature and jazz festivals make it a desirable destination for students and visitors alike. First recorded in 803, Cheltenham will pique the interest of avid amateur as well as professional historians; those interested in architecture are sure to be enamoured by the town’s Regency architecture, while football fans will be able to cheer the League Two’s Cheltenham Town F.C. Being a university town, Cheltenham does have a healthy provision of accommodation.
University halls are numerous and offer self-catered, en-suite rooms. Interestingly, those so inclined can choose to live in university-managed townhouses, as well as the refurbished original university hall, in addition to the more modern properties. Private sector providers are also present in Cheltenham with various major UK providers offering rooms in student halls.
Private halls usually offer a good variety of choice. En-suite rooms are the standard, with various sizes and standard and equipment levels available, all the way to self-contained studios with own kitchenets. Some halls offer private gyms, while all provide standard amenities such as shared kitchens and communal recreation spaces. Other options, such as flats and houses, are also available, in addition to the more traditional halls. Sharing a house with a larger group of friends grows more and more popular. Groups of 4 or more benefit from being able to rent larger properties, driving individual costs down. Smaller flats and apartments for those preferring living alone or with a partner/flatmate are also a good option. Properties like these, usually managed by landlords and estate agents benefit from the variety in location, standard, and flexibility in furnishing, as compared to university and private halls. Those looking for a more central locations, just as well as those looking for a more suburban life will surely find the right option for themselves. Estate agents, especially in university towns such as Cheltenham, specialise in student letting, for which they often have an excellent reputation.
