Living in Hull as a student

Hull, which is officially named Kingston upon Hull, is a port city based in Yorkshire. It lies on the banks of the River Hull and is a historic city with plenty to offer students. It is home to five institutes of higher education including the University of Hull, Hull York Medical School, University of Lincoln, Hull School of Art and Northern Academy of Performing Arts.

The University of Hull was recently named by the Times Higher Education as being in the top 50 UK institutions for research power and was also awarded silver for teaching excellence in 2018.
Hull itself has recently undergone a programme of renovation, meaning it’s never looked so good. There is an Italian-style plaza in front of Hull Minster, some unique fountains in Victoria Square, and lots of spectacular lighting as well. There is also a revamped fruit market and marina which have now become the heart of the city. The derelict warehouses on the marina, have now become home to bars, restaurants and art galleries.

Hull is also a great place for food and drink – and you can even do your very own student pub crawl – where you can taste lots of different locally brewed beer. Starting at Atom Bar in Ye Olde Corn Exchange and ending at Pave on Princes Avenue, this crawl offers you the best in real ales and fine craft beers.

If you fancy something a little quieter, then head to the Museum Quarter in the heart of the Old Town. Home to four museums, it also features a beautiful leisure garden as well. Talking of green spaces, Hull is home to many parks and public gardens as well. Pearson Park is worth a visit as it has a Victorian Conservatory housing birds and reptiles, while Queen’s Dock has a feature fountain at its western end.

Sports that you can enjoy in Hull include athletics, darts, professional football, golf, rugby league and water sports. Hull is also a rugby league hub and home to a Cycle Speedway club as well – along with a lacrosse club as well.
