Living in Lincoln as a student
Lincoln, a cathedral city and a county town of Leicestershire is home to 18,000 students from University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste University. Its history reaches the Iron Age, although it was properly established by the Romans who named it ‘Lindum Colonia’. The city is most famous for its cathedral, a perfect example of English Gothic architecture as well as the 11th century Lincoln Castle.
There are 29 halls in the city, most of them operated by the University of Lincoln. Students can expect most rooms to be either en-suite or self-contained studios, but there are ca. 100 rooms which share sanitary facilities with other residents. Private halls are abundant and so is their room offer. En-suite rooms are a private hall standard; same can be expected from self-contained studios which year in year are among the most popular choices. Private halls also offer a good range of amenities, including well-furnished social spaces such as common or games rooms. Sometimes, one can find halls with gyms and even private cinemas.
Other accommodation options are on offer too. Students of Lincoln’s universities seem to favour renting with a larger group of 4 or more friends. Such an arrangement helps drive down per-tenant costs and gives more flexibility in choosing room size, location, and furnishing type. Students who rent larger houses often benefit from access to the much sought-after gardens which provide that bit of private space outside, so needed during these unprecedented times. Flats are also a students’ favourite, as they benefit from a more central location in town and often offer a more cosy atmosphere than a more spacious house. Students are likely to choose this type of property if they prefer living with fewer flatmates or hope to move in with their partner. Landlords and estate agents usually manage flats and houses; many in Lincoln have a great reputation for catering to students exact needs and wants, as they specialise in renting to the city’s large student population.
