A student perspective on the Renters' Rights Bill

The Renters' Rights Bill will not only have a profound impact on landlords, but also on their tenants, most notably, students.

What is the Renters' Rights Bill?

Under the new legislation, students will be able to serve two-months notice at any given period. In effect, this will end the tenancy for the entire group. Whilst the group can then decide whether to find a replacement for the tenant, or cover the rent, the ultimate decision lies with the landlord. Students will also no longer be able to pay their rent termly (in line with student finance payments), and instead will pay monthly. This does not affect those living in student halls.

Sophia Crothall sat down with three students from our content team to find out how these new changes will affect them. The students shared whether they would make use of the two-months notice, how monthly payments will affect their budgeting, and what issues could arise for those under group tenancies.
