What do I do when I move into a new property?

Moving into a new property as a student can be exciting but also overwhelming. There’s so much to do, what should you even start with first? Luckily, this is what this blog is here to help you with!

Record Everything

The very first thing you should always do when you move into a new space is take pictures and videos of how you found the property. Specifically, anything that is broken, cracked, or stained. Documenting this at the start of your tenancy is crucial because it will help you get your deposit back at the end of your tenancy, as it will serve as proof that you are not responsible for any damage.

Safety First

Your accommodation should be clean, as well as mould and damp-free. If you notice anything odd and you’re not sure whether it’s a safety concern, contact a parent or guardian for help. To report any issues, contact your landlord or your agent as soon as possible, and remember to have pictures and videos of the issue.

Get the Bills Sorted

Next up is sorting your bills! If your bills are not included in your rent, you should speak with your roommates or housemates and decide upon a way to split the bills. To make things easier for everyone, check out student bill packages here.

Nail your Meter Readings

This one’s very easy to forget about. There’s nothing worse than having to send your meter readings last minute and having to Google how to take your meter readings while running late to a lecture. When you move in, take some time to ensure you know how to work and read your meters. If you’re likely to forget, take a note along with pictures in your Notes app to help remind you when you need to submit your readings.

House Rules

Setting house rules is really important when sharing a space with people. Agree on basic house rules like visitors and music, but it would also be a good idea to have a chores calendar to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Get Settled in

Now it’s time to unpack, organise all your belongings into your new space, and get familiar with your new property and its surroundings, especially the route to your University.
