The two universities in Southampton are the University of Southampton and Solent University. The University of Southampton was formed in 1862 and received a royal charter in 1952 and is now home to over 20,000 students. It is ranked in the top 100 research universities in the world, and the top 80 universities in the world by QS. It is also home to the National Oceanography Centre as well. Solent University is home to 17000 students and is strengths lie in design, consultancy and training. It is also home to the Warsash Maritime Academy, which offers training and certification in international shipping and off-shore oil.
When it comes to things to do, Southampton has plenty to keep you occupied. It is home to the longest surviving stretch of medieval walls in England, as well as lots of museums. If boats are your thing, the annual Southampton Boat Show is held in September each year on the city/s waterfront. There are two large theatres in the city as well, one of which has hosted many west end shows. There are also plenty of innovative art galleries where you can spend some time and plenty of musical venues.
Southampton is home to Southampton Football Club, which plays in the Premier League. Cricket is also a popular sport, played mostly at the Rose Bowl. There is also a city hockey club, Southampton Hockey Club which was formed in 1938. There are also plenty of opportunities for men and women to get involved in rugby too. Obviously, with its maritime heritage, it also offers great opportunities to get involved in water sports as well, with several marinas for you to choose from.
The city is also awash with options for your nights out as well. There are lots of stylish bars and cafes along Oxford streets, restaurants and pubs on Bedford Place, and cinemas in Leisure World. Whether it is a simple pint you crave or a sophisticated cocktail, Southampton has plenty to offer you.
